SOUTH KING IS KING
THE NEW CREW AT BOTANY VIEW HOTEL
Boutique hospitality group Bourke Street adds the third pub to its portfolio with the recent purchase of Newtown's Botany View Hotel (BVH) at the St. Peters end of King Street.
Except for increased traffic, the South end of King Street has barely changed. It's distinctly Bohemian; vintage stores pepper the street, the old-school dry cleaners and laundromats operate alongside Vietnamese bakeries, banquet restaurants and crystal jewellery stores. BVH is right in the thick of South King, just past the Bonsai shop and the Fijian Market, and between The Union Hotel, which has a long-standing history of live music and The Sydney Park Hotel, recently bought and renovated by Ray Reilly who also owns The Hensen at Marrickville.

What has changed on King Street is the influx of party patrons who now hit the top end of King Street. The central Sydney lockouts have revitalised nightlife in the Inner West, but it has for sure shifted the vibe. If you crave old Newtown, look to South King Street.
Everything you know and love about good indie pubs you will find at the BVH, along with a few surprises (revealed later in the year). Live music is central to the BVH experience, where emerging Sydney bands play every Friday and Saturday night, curated by Music Booze & Co's Matt Rule. Over the next couple of months, a new rooftop bar will be revealed, along with a dedicated dining room, refurbed front bar and a fresh refit that stays faithful to the BVH's classic pub roots.
This South end of King Street feels like the old Newtown; the cross-section of people, independent businesses and colourful local characters - all the great things that get driven out by high rents."
BVH has a reputation for quality pub meals and the Bourke Street crew plan to continue the tradition. Chef Ernie Priestly of Lady Hampshire and Lord Gladstone heads up the kitchen where he puts his spin on traditional Australian pub grub. The BVH's renovation is due for completion in the coming months when Ernie's new menu will roll-out. Until then, you can make the most of BVH's $12 renovation menu; cheeseburgers, tofu burgers, schnitzels, steak and a falafel salad are served for lunch and dinner, every day.
